Osprey Raptor 14 Backpack Review
In addition to the awesome Talon 22 backpack, Osprey also gave me the chance to try out their 2019 version of the Raptor 14 backpack.
Specifically designed for cyclists, but also great as a lightweight day pack for hiking, the Raptor 14 (hence 14 litres) is more of a hydration pack, as it comes with a 2.5L bladder reservoir, inserted into its own little clever pocket.
This 2.5L Hydraulics LT Reservoir which is both lightweight and easy to use.
The ‘Slide-Seal’ top opening allows for easy refilling and cleaning, whilst at the same time protecting against knocks and leaks.
Unlike Camelbaks, the Osprey hydraulics system bite valve offers fast, smooth water delivery which automatically seals, ensuring you don’t have to worry that you’re going to lose the nipple – which is perfect if you’re going full tilt downhill on a bike.
As the pack is geared towards cyclists and MTB riders, be in no doubt that the pack sits comfortably on the back, and is well designed with lots of clever storage features.
The pack comes with a wide range of storage features specifically tailored towards cyclists and MTB riders, including a front stretch compression pocket, scratch free sunglasses pocket, front zippered pocket, an integrated ToolWrap, an internal organiser for bike specific tools and spares, LidLock bike helmet attachment, stretch mesh side pockets and much more.
As with most modern Osprey packs, the Raptor 14 is rugged – built for the harshest of environments, it comes with a durable 210D Nylon Diamond Ripstop construction material design. Cyclists will also appreciate the integrated reflective graphics and LED light attachment loop.
Lastly, the airflow (Airscape) between your back and the pack help keeps you comfortable and non-sweaty. The adjustable padded shoulder straps, hip belt and sternum straps also ensure you can find that comfortable sweet spot.
The only downside for me (being 6ft 1″) was that the pack felt a little small on my back, and the sternum strap became more of a stomach strap, but otherwise it’s a great pack at a great price, especially as it comes with the built in reservoir, which is £32 by itself.
