Westbeach Daredevil Jacket Review

When Westbeach got in touch with me, I have to confess, I’d never heard of the brand.

No surprise, given they are based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

I’ve been on the hunt for a new ski jacket for a while, so I decided I’d take their red Daredevil jacket for a spin when I went skiing in Alpe d’Huez in France, earlier this month.

Correction – I let my brother take the jacket for a spin. He wore it in all conditions on the piste, and I thought he’d give a more unbiased view than me 🙂

Another reason for me giving the jacket to my brother is that it’s quite a long outdoors ski jacket. I’m 6ft 1, and my brother is 6ft 3, so after his feedback I can confirm the jacket suits taller people.

The Daredevil jacket has strong credentials: it is a 20k/20k waterproof and breathable jacket (you can read up on why that is important here). It is a non-insulated, stretch jacket, for better freedom of movement on the piste, and it is fully seam sealed, to ensure that it can beat off the snow, rain and wind with ease.

Good job really, because the day my brother tested out the jacket, it was windy and snowy to the highest degree in the Southern French Alps…

Even when we getting blown around on the ski lift, my brother said he was warm, and that the jacket was keeping the wind and snow out – top marks, as you would expect from a jacket with 20k/20k waterproof and breathability ratings.

In fact he only had two negative comments about the jacket: 1) It’s not particularly stylist – the badges velcro’d to the left sleeve is a little weird, but if style doesn’t bother you, then neither will his comment, and 2) the lift pass pocket in on the inside left, lower down towards the bottom of the jacket. That get’s a pass mark, just, but if you have any issues with the sensor in your pass, it means you have to take off your gloves, unzip your jacket and then sort out the lift pass.

Other than those two comments, he gave the jacket rave reviews!

You won’t find many ski jackets with 20k/20k waterproof and breathability for less than £250, and the Daredevil comes in at £260 (prices correct as of February 2019). In fact Westbeach had a 50% off sale in January this year, meaning you could pick up this jacket for a bargain price of £130, which is very impressive indeed.
