Fancy a hike through some of the most stunning Alpine scenery in Europe, whilst enjoy some of the best lager and whisky you’ll ever taste?

WHAT? – a two day hike through stunning mountain ranges in the Swiss Alps, staying in two mountain huts a long the way. Each hut serves beer, has its own barrel of whisky and can provide food.

WHEN? – Thurs 4th September to Sunday 7th September 2025

Thursday 4th – Fly into Zurich at your leisure, get the train / car hire to St Gallen. Beers in the Swiss town that loves it’s football.

Friday 5th – Travel from St. Gallen to Appenzell/Weissbad (30 – 40 mins journey). Drop main bags, carry day hiking bag with minimal items for 2 days of hiking.

Start the hike at Brulisau. Head up to Hoher Kasten (1794m) before ending up at Bollenwees for dinner and spend the night. Approx 5 hours of hiking. 4 guesthouse stops along the way for a beer (whisky optional but recommended).

Saturday 6th – Hike from Bollenwees over past Botzel -> Meglisalp ->Mesmer -> ending up at the stunning Seealpsee lake, where we have dinner and spend the night. Approx 4 – 5 hours walking time. I’ve done the Meglisalp to Seealpsee section before.

Sunday 7th – Hike from Seealpsee to Aescher (around 1 hour), hike through the caves before taking the cable car back down to Wasserauen. Train from Wasserauen back to the car / bags. Travel back to Zurich Airport, fly home.

View the map below, with durations between each point. All these paths are very well marked. Some places around these mountain areas require you to keep hold of a steel rope, and you need to keep your wits about you, especially if it’s wet, but boy are the views worth it.
